The Microlab should be charged for 16 Hours approx before use
The Microlab uses either mains or the rechargeable battery power. The battery should last 7-8 hours during constant use when fully charged.
To switch on the Microlab press the on (l) key.
A menu will be displayed on the screen as follows:

You can choose whether to perform a 1-Relaxed VC (Slow Vital Capacity)
2-Forced VC.
Option 3 allows you to print a list of the records stored in the memory
Option 4 allows you to review a test saved in the memory and recall it if necessary for a Post Bronchial Dilator test.
Once you have selected a Relaxed or Forcedtest you will be asked to key in the patient's details. You will be asked to enter the Sex, Age and Height of the patient.
To change the Sex from Male to Female press key 1 and then
(enter) key. Next enter the age of the person and then the height in cm (inches if selected in configuration menu). The last option is to change from Caucasian to Non-caucasian if necessary. After you key in each item you need to press
(enter). The screen will change to display either a Flow/Volume or Volume/Time curve (depending on which is selected). You will see that the patient's predicted curve (as a dotted line) is displayed on the screen.
Any key should be pressed on the keypad to start the test and the patient should be instructed to carry out a spirometry manoeuvre.
The graphs will be displayed in real time as the patient blows into the Spirometer.

You should carry out the best of three tests to ensure correct technique. To re-test select 1-Again.
If the blow was incorrect e.g. a second breath had been taken select 2-Reject perform the blow again.
When three satisfactory tests have been performed (within +/-5% as displayed) select 3-Done.
A new menu will be displayed and you now have the option to perform a 1-Post-BD (Bronchial Dilator) test, this can be used to check for reversibility.
2-Report on screen, this will display the Base (actual values achieved) and %Pred values (actual values expressed as a % of predicted value).
To save the test into memory (for a later reversibility test) select option 3-Save, you will then be asked to enter an identity number, this can be up to 10 digits long.
4-Print to print out the test performed.
When finished you can select option 5-End Examination and you will be returned to the first screen to test a new patient.
